Preliminary election results show that Liz Lovelett maintains her position in the State Senate, $30 vehicle tabs was approved and the county’s levy lift is still in the air. Here’s who is ahead in Whatcom County election races after first count Nov. 5

State Sen. Liz Lovelett, an Anacortes Democrat, was leading Daniel Miller of Friday Harbor by a count of 68% to 31% for the 40th Legislative District seat in a confirmation vote that’s required because she was appointed to the post in February, replacing Kevin Ranker who resigned in January amid sexual harassment allegations. Totals for the race span three counties: San Juan, plus parts of Whatcom and Skagit. Lovelett was leading in all three counties.

Anacortes City Council approves inclusion resolution 6-1

As a person of Jewish heritage whose first language was Hebrew, Laura Spehar said she’s more familiar with the feeling of fear than the feeling of being included.

That’s why, she said, the city’s inclusion resolution is so important.

“No one will ever understand the power of hate speech better than people of ethnicity, gender difference or sexual orientation differences,” Spehar told the mayor and City Council on Monday. “We know all too well what can happen when speech ignites violence.”

Lovelett, Miller seek the 40th District state Senate seat. Here’s what voters should know

State Sen. Liz Lovelett, an Anacortes Democrat, will be defending her 40th Legislative District seat against Daniel Miller in a confirmation vote that’s required because she was appointed to the post in February. She replaced Kevin Ranker who resigned in January amid sexual harassment allegations. Ranker was elected in 2016, so the 40th District state Senate seat is open again in 2020, and whoever wins will again face election next year. The 40th District includes San Juan County and parts of Skagit County and south Bellingham.
